60年代威廉·戛纳电影作品比较丰富，著名的有《闯入者》、《纽伦堡大审判》（Judgment at Nuremberg）等。除了电影，夏纳还《Alfred Hitchcock Presents》、《The Defenders》等电视剧中担任客串1966年作为USS Enterprise舰长拍摄了三季《星舰迷航记》（Star Trek）。该剧拍摄完成后威廉把大部分时间花在拍摄黄金时段播放电视剧上面，如《Hawaii Five-O》、《Marcus Welby》等。同时也出演了《Comanche blanco》和《蜘蛛王国》（Kingdom of the Spiders）等几部影片，不过大都是B级片甚至更低。直到80年代，夏纳演艺事业才再次焕发出活力，把“星舰”系列（又称星际迷航系列）电视剧拍摄成了大制作系列电影《星舰迷航记》（Star Trek: The Motion Picture）、《星舰迷航记2：天汗愤怒》（Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan）、《星舰迷航记3：魔宫龙虎斗》（Star Trek III: The Search for Spock）、《星舰迷航记4：抢救未来》（Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home）和《星舰迷航记5：终极先锋》（Star Trek V: The Final Frontier）和《星舰迷航记6：未来之城 》（Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country）。他还出演过警匪连续剧《T.J. Hooker》，威廉·夏纳以其喜剧天份在《瞒天过海飞飞飞》（Airplane II: The Sequel）、《重装武器1》（Loaded Weapon 1）和《选美小姐》（Miss Congeniality）中征服了无数粉丝。
